- Some fields like school counselor don’t require as many hours of course work. They generally require the completion of a 48-hour program that is CACREP-accredited and includes a minimum of 6 hours of work experience.
- Make sure that your steps towards becoming a counselor match up with the requirements of the Board each step of the way.
Your graduate program may include the option to gain work experience that can be used towards your supervised practice requirement later. Just make sure that any internship or volunteering you participate in approved by the Board.
Prior to being licensed as an LPC you will become a Licensed Associate Counselor. This status is received by passing the NCE. The National Counselor Exam can be taken in your last semester of college at the earliest. Those looking to become a substance abuse counselor will need to complete an oral portion to the written exam as well.
Once you have completed your testing and education you will be required to complete two years of overseen practice which is roughly 2,000 hours. Those interested in become addiction counselors will need to complete 3,000 hours.
